Become a Range Safety Officer

Citizen Games runs on certified Range Safety Officers. If you care about firearms safety, community leadership, and growing a movement — this is how you step up.

RSO Needed

Citizen Games events require certified RSOs on-site at all times. Certification takes as little as one day — and your community needs you.

The Role

What Does an RSO Actually Do?

A Range Safety Officer is the backbone of every safe shooting event. RSOs are trained to supervise all range activity, enforce safety protocols, and respond immediately when something goes wrong. They're not just referees — they're leaders who set the tone for everyone on the range.

At Citizen Games specifically, RSOs oversee competitor transitions between fitness and shooting stages, conduct mandatory safety briefings, verify safe firearm handling, and have full authority to halt any activity that poses a risk.

Important Note

Citizen Games does not issue RSO certifications directly. All certifications must be completed through a recognized national organization (listed below) before volunteering at our events. Once certified, we'd love to have you on our team.

Safety Briefings
Conduct mandatory pre-event safety briefings for all competitors at each stage
Range Commands
Issue and enforce all range commands: Load, Make Ready, Fire, Cease Fire, Unload
Firearm Inspection
Verify safe direction, trigger discipline, and proper handling at all times
Competitor Oversight
Monitor competitor movement during firearm-to-fitness transitions
Incident Response
Immediately halt activity and manage any unsafe condition or medical event
Authority
Final authority on all safety matters — supersedes competition scoring
Why Get Certified

The Benefits of RSO Certification

RSO certification is one of the most practical and respected credentials in the shooting sports community. It pays dividends whether you compete, work at a range, or simply want to be the most responsible gun owner in the room.

01
Professional Credibility
RSO certification from organizations like the NRA or USCCA is widely recognized across ranges, law enforcement, and the firearms industry. It signals competence and seriousness to employers, event organizers, and peers alike.
02
Deep Safety Expertise
You'll master the Four Rules of firearm safety at an instructional level — not just as a shooter, but as someone responsible for enforcing them. This knowledge directly makes you and everyone around you safer on and off the range.
03
Community Leadership
RSOs are trusted figures in the 2A community. Volunteering at events like Citizen Games puts you in a position of genuine influence — shaping how new shooters experience the sport for the first time.
04
Career Opportunities
Ranges, gun clubs, law enforcement agencies, and private security firms actively seek certified RSOs. Certification is often a prerequisite for paid range staff positions and firearm instruction roles.
05
Free Entry to Citizen Games Events
Certified RSOs who volunteer at Citizen Games events receive complimentary entry to that event's competition — as our way of saying thank you for keeping everyone safe.
06
Teach the Next Generation
Many RSO courses are a prerequisite for becoming a certified firearm instructor. If you want to eventually teach others, RSO certification is your first step on that path.
07
Advance the 2A Mission
Safe, well-run events are the strongest argument for the Second Amendment. Every RSO who shows up is a direct investment in the long-term health of the shooting sports and responsible gun culture in America.
